Soul of Travel Episode 197 Transcript

Women’s travel, transformational travel, sustainable travel, women leaders in travel, social entrepreneurship

Christine: Welcome to this episode of Soul of Travel podcast. This is actually our last episode of season five and it's a solo show with me. So you've just get me today. I have some updates to share with you a little bit of things to maybe philosophize on and then some information about what's coming in season six, which is already underway and we're really excited to be able to share with you.

Christine: I'm going to start off this conversation. I just mentioned we, and I just want to shout out my podcast producer, Carly Oduardo. She has been supporting me on this journey for the last four years, and I really appreciate how she cheers me on how she moved from friend and fan of the podcast to writing and producing our episodes and episode blogs.

Christine: And I definitely couldn't do this without her. So I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that a huge part of my team. Okay, so a little recap of where we are now, five seasons later on the podcast. So hard to believe, looking back to the beginning of the podcast, when I wasn't even sure what a podcast was, till today has been quite a journey.

Christine: I'm so grateful for all of the conversations I've had, everything that I've learned, the community that has been created around the podcast. So thank you everyone who has been a part of that with me. As we kick off season six, we're going to be just about to reach the 200th episode mark. I will be announcing an online gathering soon and I'll have a link here in the show notes.

Christine: So that you can join us for that event, my most recent statistics, just in case you'd love to hear. I always love to look at this as not necessarily that the statistics themselves are important, but just because the goal of this podcast is to create impact and reach as many people as possible to elevate the voices of the women I'm speaking to these statistics.

Christine: Just let me know that we're headed in the right direction. So right now, we have about 36, 000 lifetime downloads from the beginning of the show when it was launched until today, about 36, 000 downloads. And when we look at those downloads, our listeners are finding us in 125 countries, which is so amazing to me to think of what a wide net is being woven.

Christine: by telling these stories. And our listeners come from over 2, 600 cities. Breaking that down a little, most of our listeners come from these top five countries. The U. S., Canada, U. K., Ecuador, and Australia. And the most downloads come from Quito, Ecuador, Kalispell, Montana, which, shout out, that's not far from where I grew up in Polson, Montana, so I'm thankful to my listeners who are probably mostly friends there.

Christine: Seattle, Washington, Denver, Colorado, here where I'm based, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which is also the base of Journeywoman, who is our presenting partner for the podcast. Some things that we're learning about the podcast, especially as we're trying to get more and more advertisers and supporters, we've been trying to get better understanding of who our audience is.

Christine: Um, and maybe to no surprise, but our audience is just over 88 percent female and 9 percent male. And something that really surprised me is the age range. Which brings listeners from between ages of 18 to 60. And I was really surprised that we have some younger listeners as well. However, most of our listeners are between the ages of 35 and 59.

Christine: So it's just been great to get a better sense of who our audience is. If I didn't already mention, that's Spotify data that I was looking at. There's all sorts of other, um, data points that we can pull from to start to get some of this information. For me, I think it's great to see how many women are engaging in the podcast, but also how many men are listening and supporting friends and family and colleagues as well, and who are interested in learning more about more mindful travel, and I hope how they can support women in the industry.

Christine: Some big news, if you haven't already heard, Soul of Travel podcast is nominated for a Women in Podcasting award and voting is still open. So if you would love to support the show, you can vote now until October 1st by visiting www. womenpodcasters. com slash vote. Again, that's www. womenpodcasters. com slash vote.

Christine: And of course I'll have that link in their show notes on our website. So if you can't find anything you hear me talking about today, no, you can always visit souloftravelpodcast. com and find the episode blogs and any of the things that we reference in any of our conversations. I'm excited in the next couple of weeks.

Christine: I'm gearing up for travel conference season. I'll be at Arrival in San Diego, September 30th through October 3rd, where I'll be a part of a group of podcasters who are attending the event. I think maybe this is the first time an event is intentionally bringing a group of podcasters. There's going to be a podcasting booth.

Christine: So we're going to be able to host interviews right from Arrival. And so I can't wait to connect with them. Some of the attendees and find new podcast guests There's also a few women's events that I'm really excited to be attending during arrival. I'm also looking forward to attending Adventure Travel World Summit in Panama in October, where I'll be facilitating a discussion and networking session for the women of the Adventure Travel Trade Association community.

Christine: This is something I'm beyond excited for. It's something I've envisioned for a really long time. And I'm so grateful that there's going to be a space for this conversation at ATTA. So if you're going to be at that event, make sure you're looking for that women's coffee on the agenda. It's scheduled on the agenda.

Christine: So we all have time and space to gather and connect with one another. As I mentioned when I was talking about some of that data, the numbers and statistics, uh, we are looking for podcast sponsors and have marketing opportunities for Season 6 still available. I would love to connect with you if you feel like this audience is your audience.

Christine: I think this is such a great way for you not only to be able to talk about the products and services that you offer, but also to be able to tell a unique and different story while we're doing that. You've probably heard me talk about brands that I'm really excited about. Um, I try to tell a different story than you might hear in a normal 30 second advertisement for these brands.

Christine: So it's something I think is a, is a really great way to connect and to even begin to shine a different on your brand or service. So if you're interested in that, let me know again, there'll be a link in the show notes. You can also email me at connect at Lotus sojourns. com. And I also mentioned in the last few episodes that we're going to be launching an, an iFundWomen capital campaign.

Christine: I'm doing this all on myself, so I have to kind of try to keep the horse before the cart. I can't even say it right because I think my cart is always before the horse, um, but I'm figuring out all the details so that I can launch that and have a little bit more opportunity for patrons of the podcast to support us, to keep the conversations going.

Christine: Thank you to this year's sponsor Trafalgar and the Travel Corporation as well as Safety Wing who recently joined me as a partner for the podcast helping me to produce the last four episodes. So again, if this sounds like something you're curious about, let's have a conversation because I think there's some unique ways that we can create content for your brand, highlight the impact that you're having in the travel industry, talk about mindful, meaningful, responsible travel, and promote your product to this community of listeners who are really excited about making their travel more meaningful and making responsible travel choices.

Christine: Next up, I want to talk a little bit about what we can look for beyond the podcast next year. Um, the season is beginning in October, but I'm looking forward to 2025. And I've been talking for a while now about in person events. And I think 2025 is the year we're finally going to be able to make this happen.

Christine: One of the things that I'll be offering is a Discover Your Travel Values and Book Values Aligned Travel Workshop. This is something that I have done for events and communities and it's really valuable and I want to bring that into an in person event. Most likely that'll be happening in Here in the Denver area, but keep your eyes open.

Christine: You never know what could happen. I am also planning some solo travel guest meetups to bring together all of these incredible women who have been on the podcast. We're going to look at gathering in a few areas where there's already a high concentration of guests. So LA, Seattle, maybe New York, and again, here in Denver.

Christine: And then the last thing that I'm really excited to bring back, I started this with Lotus Sojourns. It's also going to be something that I'm going to blend together here with Soul of Travel and do a few Denver Soul of Travel social gatherings. For these events, I really want to focus on supporting women owned businesses here in Denver.

Christine: There's a few great options. I also want to find different businesses that support fair trade or other social impact initiatives and find ways that we can Connect, have a great time and support businesses aligned with our travel values. Some of you have asked, I don't have any trips coming up for 2025 yet, but perhaps next fall again, we'll see how things fall together.

Christine: Something I haven't talked about a lot on the podcast, but Lotus Sojourns which is my mindful adventure travel company for women is in a bit of a period of transition. In fact, I'm putting all the pieces in place for a bit of a restructuring and a rebrand. So look out for that also coming to you in 2025. Now I'm realizing all that I'm putting on my plate, which is going to be ironic with what I want to talk about next, but I'm feeling really good about all of these choices.

Christine: I'll still be offering mindful group travel experiences for women that focus on social impact and creating community, but I'll also be offering travel coaching to help you deepen the impact of your own experiences and be working with a few businesses to help them develop their own mindful travel offerings.

Christine: Again, be sure you're on our mailing list so you don't miss any of these new events and offers. You can visit www. souloftravelpodcast. com and the mailing list invite will pop up so you won't miss it. Okay, so here's some of the more philosophical sections. That I've been thinking about including in this solo show recently.

Christine: I've been having a lot of conversations about defining success Redefining success living and working on your own terms And I had a great conversation recently with an episode that's coming out in season six with Fly the Fox, so make sure you listen to that. I've also had conversations about this with Iris Srebrenescu back in episode 95 and a little more recently with Amanda Riffey in episode 178.

Christine: And I think that really understanding what success looks like and feels like for you is really important, especially as an entrepreneur. I know that in my own journey, this is something that I have to keep coming back to and checking in with because it's so easy to get caught up in the story of success or what we think success should look like and feel like and what we'll be doing when we are successful.

Christine: But I think when we really examine what's important to us, we can put that into place to creating something that is successful on our own terms. Also, in my conversation I just had with Brianne Kiefner, and I think I've also chatted a little bit about this with Kirsten Gardner, talking about personal health, well being, burnout.

Christine: I think these are also conversations that are really important, conversations that keep coming up more and more here on the podcast, but also in my social circles, in my entrepreneurial And in the greater travel community as well. So I think this is something that's really important to be paying attention to.

Christine: Some of the things I've been thinking about is how, you know, When we are reaching for success, you're, you're often thinking about giving it your all, never quitting. And you find yourself in this hustle culture. And it feels like that is really important when you're launching a business to make sure people can see and feel your hustle.

Christine: And again, operating in this way without really checking in with ourselves to make sure. We're hustling towards anything that we even really want to be achieving. And then the other conversation that is coming up a lot is burnout and really trying to understand what this actually means, something beyond burnout.

Christine: being busy or being tired. In the last episode of this season, I really dive in with Breanne Kiefner and talk about this. Again, my conversation with Amanda Riffey. You can also go back and hear from Michaela Malozzi, Poonam Rawat Khan, and Kelly Kimple, just to name a few, because really this conversation comes up a lot.

Christine: But I think it's really important for us to keep an eye on this and understand what it means in our own lives. It also reminds me of this sticky note that I have sitting on my computer that says, give this 70%, which for me is something that is a really good reminder. And part of where this came from, I again was feeling just a tremendous amount of weight of all of my responsibilities in.

Christine: My travel business, my podcast, raising my three daughters, all of just living life in general. And someone was asking me, kind of trying to help me assess where I was putting my energy and why I was feeling so burnt out and why my cup felt so empty. And they asked, when you are working in your business, you know, how much do you feel like you're giving your business?

Christine: What, you know, do you feel like you give your business a hundred percent? And I was like, yes, I definitely give my business a hundred percent. It might ebb and flow between more towards the podcast, more towards my travel company, but there's a hundred percent somewhere in the mix. And then they said, what about when that comes to your family?

Christine: Like, oh yeah, a hundred percent, a hundred and ten percent. Sometimes it feels like a hundred and fifty percent. And then they asked another category and I'm like, Oh yeah, that's definitely a hundred percent. They're like, okay, great. So you're putting a hundred percent here, a hundred percent here, a hundred and fifty percent here.

Christine: You know, what percent is that? I was like, okay, great. We're getting at 400%. Now, I understand why I'm so exhausted. And then they really challenged me to think about not just trying to say, okay, 30 percent family, 20 percent kids, 40 percent business to equal a pie out to 100%. But what if you took it back even further?

Christine: Further and just gave things 70%. And for me, that was a super challenging idea because again, kind of going to this, idea of success or this kind of gold star mindset that I felt like really exemplifies what I was trying to work towards all of my life as a child, in high school, in college, early in my career, and now to always give everything a hundred percent and try to earn that, that gold star, try to earn that A plus, try to get the extra credit.

Christine: That's always been how I've worked. And the idea that 70% Might be enough is something that is a really triggering idea But also I think a really important idea and as I've been dealing with a lot of personal health issues a lot of times I don't even have 70 percent to give but I really use that 70 percent as a way to give myself grace and space To make sure that I'm getting everything that really needs to be done, done and all of those extra things that are the icing on the cake and the gold star moments.

Christine: Looking at those and realizing that they're not actually important to the success of my business or to my overall well being. And usually they're detrimental to my overall well being. So, that's something I just wanted to think about. The other thing that this giving 70 percent reminds me of is a quote by Glennon Doyle.

Christine: I think I've mentioned her here on the podcast. I definitely mentioned her. I definitely mention her a lot in my Lotus Sojourns community and in my book Sojourn and in that context. But one of the things that she talked about really early on in her podcast, We Can Do Hard Things. If you're curious, you can go back and find episode 16.

Christine: But she talks about loving quitting. Again, this was something, when I first heard her talking about it, was super trickering. I thought, oh my gosh, how can you love quitting? Going back to what I was saying, giving it your all, never quit, hustle culture, like we are taught not to quit. That quitting is shameful.

Christine: And in the podcast, someone had asked Glennon how does she not quit because she is involved So many things and a lot of things are around topics that can be very weighty. And if you know anything about Glennon, sometimes it seems like that would be really crippling. And what I love when they ask, how do you not quit?

Christine: Glennon says, Oh, I do quit. Quitting is my favorite. Every day I quit. Every single day, I wake up, I care the most amount, and then at some point, I put it all away and melt into my people and my couch and my food and nothingness, and I care not at all. I begin and quit every day. It's the only way to survive.

Christine: And in the book Sojourn, a little while after I had heard this episode of the podcast, we were talking about quitting and also the idea that quitting is really important sometimes, because when you let something go, Especially something that has a lot of stagnant energy or feels like more of a burden.

Christine: When you let that go, you actually create all this space in your life. So I feel like that's interesting to think about how important it is to actually quit and to maybe quit intentionally and consciously. And not the idea that you're giving up per se, but you're really making a decision to stop doing something.

Christine: And, um, I felt like that was just a really interesting shift. And if you couple the give this 70 percent with the ability to love quitting, I feel like that starts to create some pretty different energy in our lives. If you're interested in some of these talking points, a few conversations around being true to yourself, you can listen to me chat with Sani Mayboom, Nabila Ismail, or Tess Milholland, and they really talk a lot about being true to yourself.

Christine: So all that said, leans me into some of my own moments and questioning, you know, what's a yes and what's a no in my life. My book Sojourn is something that I've definitely talked about here on the podcast. I've advertised it so that you can join me. It has been full of ups and downs the last year. Also, it's always pure magic, but there have been moments for me In this time where I'm really trying to create balance in my life, focus on my own wellbeing, trying to give things 70%, that the book Sojourn has honestly felt like a heavy lift.

Christine: However, I've had lots of women reaching out, wondering if there's another round this year, and I would love to end the year with one more soulful book sojourn, and finally bring our community together to read On Our Best Behavior by Elise Lonan. I am sure you've heard me talk about Elise Lunen. If not, she has one of my favorite podcasts of all time called Pulling the Thread.

Christine: I highly recommend listening to her and her guests. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, beautiful conversation. I feel so nourished every time I listen. So I'm going to be bringing. The Soulful Book sojourned back at least for November and December. I'm not sure if I'm committing to anything after that, so this might be the last time, but we'll see what the energy is around it for me and for everyone else.

Christine: And I know that November and December can be such a busy time of year, but again, these are super nourishing conversations and beautiful connections, so I'd love to invite you if this is your time. Um, and then we'll probably have a wrap up conversation again in January, just to make sure you're feeling really grounded and connected as you kick off 2025.

Christine: So to find out more about that, you'll guess it. Be sure you're on the mailing list. Again, it's the easiest way for me to communicate what's going on, especially in this time where there's a lot of transition. Okay. Before I end this solo episode, I just want to talk a little bit about season six. I never know exactly how the next season is going to come together, but at one point I opened the bookings and reach out to women on my potential guest list.

Christine: And turn on my Calendly. Then I start seeing everybody booking time for their conversation. And like magic, this space begins to weave itself together. I start to see the next list of names lining up side by side, which is one of my favorite things about the podcast is that Because every story in and of itself is great, but when I make these little graphics that have everybody's faces from the past season, or from the top most listened to seasons, or even the podcasts that I'm going to be sharing for the next month, this container and this space of community and collaboration, even though they're operating independently, just bringing them together for me is amazing.

Christine: It's the real, real big magic. So right now I'm in that space of seeing this story start to weave together and I see the names lining up and I begin to hear their stories and all of a sudden I see the whole season of storytelling unveiled. So to get you excited about the faces you're going to see popping up on Instagram and the voices who will be sharing their journey and their wisdom, I want to give you a little sneak peek and share who you'll be hearing from soon.

Christine: I'm really excited to be bringing back Zina Benchik, who's the Managing Director EMEA of Intrepid Travel. I talked to her for a shorter conversation as a part of a special series for Women in Travel CIC for the International Women Travel and Tourism Forum. I knew she and I had so much more to get into and I cannot wait to have her back and bring her to share her wisdom here on the podcast.

Christine: Shaina Zand, who is the Director of Partnerships and Enterprises at WeTravel, is going to be joining me soon. She is also Vice Chair of the Board at Tourism Cares. I've been lucky to connect with her at a few events in the past, and I'm really, really excited to bring her voice here to the podcast. I've already mentioned Lila Fox.

Christine: She's the owner of Lila Fox Travel and also hosts her own podcast called Choices. Thank you, Lila. She is a soulfully aligned human, and I am so grateful to be connected with her and to share her expertise and wisdom with you. I get a chance to sit down and talk with Mia Taylor, who is an award winning journalist who shares her passion for writing about sustainability, wildlife conservation, and parenting.

Christine: She also shares about the Travel Pulse list she curates. that celebrates the most influential women in travel. I'm so honored to have been included on that list in 2023, and it's my favorite thing to see each year, and to witness the community that comes together around that list as well. A few other women you'll be hearing from are Jaleesa Whitley, a fellow Women's Work alum and creator of book, Trips.

Christine: Also Zoe Shapiro, who is the founder of Stellavision Travel. And Kedi Wilhelm, who is a sustainable travel writer and founder at TiltedMap. com. These are all women who I'm so excited about and I cannot wait for you to hear their stories. But all that said, before we get to season six, we're going to be taking a two week break after this episode, actually, to honor that need for a little breathing room and balance in my own life.

Christine: I'm also going to be taking some time to get together our iFundWomen capital campaign that I want to launch in order to continue to support the podcast. You might not know that this has been a primarily self funded project, and so it's really important at this point in the life of the podcast To go ahead and bring in some more support.

Christine: So, again, stay tuned. Join the newsletter. I'll be sharing more information about it there. I will also be sharing in the early episodes of Season 6 on how you can get involved as a patron of the podcast. Again, we're still looking for advertisers and sponsors. So if this is a space that's aligned with your vision and your values, I would love to talk to you about how we can work together.

Christine: I'd also love to connect with you. If you are. So if you aren't already, I can't believe I'm going to say it again, but the easiest way to be in touch and find out about how you can engage with and support the podcast is our newsletter. So find the sign up on souloftravelpodcast. com. Again, we're working on hosting a few live events.

Christine: This next year, also, I envision a few online panel discussions that you're going to be able to join. I'd love to hear about topics that you are interested in, specific questions you have that our experts might be able to answer or guests that you would love to hear from. So I'll share a link to a Google survey in our show notes, and you can offer your feedback, your thoughts, your suggestions.

Christine: Another great way to share what you love about the podcast is to leave a comment. a review on Apple podcast or Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, make sure you're following us so you don't miss any episodes. I really, really appreciate that connection. And if you want to continue to support and grow the show, sharing an episode with a friend and telling them why they might love it is something that's really helpful for us as well.

Christine: Okay. I think I've hit everything that I wanted to share with you as we wrap up season five of Soul of travel podcast. I can hardly believe that we're going to be ready for season six soon. I really look forward to all of those conversations. I look forward to the opportunity to be able to connect with you virtually, perhaps meet you out there in real life.

Christine: Until then, I hope you'll enjoy your journey.
