Soul of Travel Episode 222 Transcript

Women’s travel, transformational travel, sustainable travel, women leaders in travel, social entrepreneurship

Hey listeners, it's Christine joining you today for a solo episode to wrap up Women's History Month. What a ride this month has been on so many levels. I know I've mentioned this in past years, but I always pause when looking at how to attack this month focused on celebrating women. I always want to do more and take on more.

Then I find myself falling short because. Well, I'm just me. As I begin to reflect, I find myself realizing I spend my energy on amplifying women all year long, and I don't really need a special month for a focused ad campaign or targeted newsletter, so I decide to let myself off the hook a bit. This march has been a particular struggle.

As I kicked off the month on the first with a migraine or series of migraines that really has persisted until today with only some reprieve. So maybe this is my body's way of saying I'm doing enough, or perhaps even too much already. If you have listened to the last two episodes of the podcast. You'll know that my dear friend and brave podcast producer totally stepped up for me.

Thank you, Carly Eduardo, for stepping in and recording the episode introductions so that those episodes could go out as scheduled and so that you. My listener can enjoy each of them. In this episode, I wanna share a little bit more about our new subscription platform, soul of Travel Beyond. I want to celebrate some of the successes of the amazing Soul of travel, guests and community.

Share some wisdom and let you know what you'll be hearing from us in the coming months. Thank you so much for spending this time with me today and always. Let's begin with beyond. Over the past four years, many of you have asked for exclusive access to premium content. Maybe not in those words, but asking for more, asking for additional content, and asking for community.

I am so excited to finally be bringing you this offer that takes us beyond our soulful conversations. This is a place where we go deeper. To learn even more from our guests as they share their wisdom and personal and professional journeys in our soul of travel beyond premium subscription community, you will get early access to bonus episodes and series exclusive access to live expert panels with q and a opportunities.

Soulful Stopovers, which are quick conversations on specific topics that have surfaced and seem resonant and worthy of further exploration and reflections from me, your host. When you join Beyond, you also support the show by joining our community. The subscription is available via Buzzsprout for $10 a month.

When you join, the first thing you'll experience in Beyond is our Women's Wisdom series, which brings together different perspectives from the incredible women who have spoken to me over the years. As I had reflected back on those conversations, I saw common themes emerge. I. This series weaves together their wisdom in a way that makes their insights even more powerful and accessible.

I have poured my heart into curating this series to inspire and support you on your own journey. And with your subscription, you'll also gain access to our community. You'll join a vibrant, supportive community of lighthearted women who believe in the power of meaningful travel. And as I mentioned, as a member, you'll have access to live q and a sessions, virtual events, and opportunities to share your story and experience.

I'll be curating content that ties directly into the themes of the podcast, mindful exploration. The values we bring to travel, how we can align our professional journeys with our passions and how to express our whole selves in our careers. I believe that travel has the power to transform lives and soul of travel beyond is here to amplify that potential.

This premium offering is an invitation to journey deeper with me, whether you're seeking inspiration. Tools for personal growth or a community that shares your values, soul of Travel Beyond is here to support you. To subscribe. You can simply visit our Soul of Travel podcast website or follow the link in the show notes.

Your support will not only enhance your travel experience, but it also enables us to continue creating impactful and inspiring content for listeners like you. As I was thinking about this episode, I was reminded of a conversation I had with Beth Santos, founder and CEO of Wonderful and author of Wonder Woman.

We talked last year, just before International Women's Day to share about the launch of her book, wonder Woman. Which is celebrating its first birthday. Congratulations, Beth. She and I dug into the space of how we can navigate these months that can feel complex. I thought I would share her wisdom with all of you.

Here again today, if you'd like to hear this full conversation, you can head back to episode 1 71.

we're recording this episode a day before International Women's Day, so this is, um, you know, a great timing for us, but also this is a moment when we kind of feel the weight of this week and this month. And, you know, as I mentioned, being women that are really focusing on creating spaces for women and gender equity.

Like we can feel a huge struggle with how to show up right now. And I, again, I feel like I've read posts that, you know, that you have kind of wrestled with this as well. And for me right now, I'm coming off of a year of having some kind of weird health issues. And then last month I had like everything that my kids decided to bring home from the Petri dish of school.

And all of a sudden it's February or it's March and. You know, it's, it's time to be doing all these things that we need to do to get the word out for International Women's Day, for Women's History Month. And I just was thinking like, how much does it honor what I'm trying to say, to be giving a hundred per 110% right now?

And speaking as loud as possible, because this is when people are primed to listen. And how much does that kind of support the actual need to have a month where we're focusing on the fact that women's voices need to be heard and, and I wrestle with this for Black History Month, I wrestle with this for, for every space.

Like I feel like if we are who we are, who we say we are, we're actually doing this all of the time. Right? Mm-hmm. And, and again, back to LinkedIn, you just made a great post about this, about like what we can be doing 12 months of the year, but I wanted to talk to you, how do you. How do you kind of wrap yourself around this struggle?

'cause I'm sure you feel it too, like there's, yeah, there's such a, again, like an emotional dissonance here of like, what's the right thing to do in this, in this space. It's such an interesting paradox. I think that like Women's History month is the time when we are putting the most strain on the shoulders of women.

Same with Black History Month, as you were saying. Like, that is the time when we're expecting the most like mental and emotional labor from black people. Like, you know, I think that is a challenge. And on the one hand, you know, you're, you're trying to speak out at a time when people are listening and I think that's.

That's at the end of the day, kind of like my primary thought. I actually, actually, we, to be totally honest with you, we rescheduled, and I put this in my post. We rescheduled the book launch to March because of Women's History Month. You know, it was originally January. Moved it. The publisher moved it to April when she found out I was pregnant.

And they were like, we're gonna give you three months. And then I said, no, let's push it back to March. Because March is women's history month and March is when people are listening and they're looking for opportunities to talk about women. And the book will give them an opportunity to do that. So like, I absolutely like used the system because like it or not, in March, people are reaching out and they're like, oh yeah, women, huh?

We don't have an article about that crap. Where should we go? You know? And like they're looking for stuff. So, so I think on the one hand it is great to, to take that energy. It's great that there is energy. Like that's lovely. But I think on the other hand, it puts so much work onto the shoulders of women who are like, okay, this is the one time of year everybody's listening to me, so what do I have to say?

What's like my big thing? What's the important thing that I need to say right now in this moment? 'cause I'm not gonna have another moment. And so the post that I had posted was. Yeah, it was kind of like, I don't think, and again, this is all personal opinion, I don't think having, I know some people are like, oh, you know, forget these, like Women history month, that's stupid because we should be celebrating women all year.

I agree. But I also think that we're just busy people that forget a lot of stuff and we're fickle and we just forget. And I think if we, instead of being like, this is my month to talk about women, maybe we make it more internal. We think like, okay, this is my month to consider. What am I doing for women?

Like this is my month to think about it. I'm gonna give myself the month to reflect on it throughout the rest of the year. I'm gonna implement those things. But this is my time to like, to measure up, you know, and to be like, how many women have I hired? What's the diversity of the women on my, you know, C-suite?

Um, how many women in my amplifying in my work, am I going to women own businesses, et cetera. Like if everyone could just take. 10 minutes to think about that and then map out a plan for the rest of the year. Okay, this is how, this is my hiring plan for women going forward. This is how I'm going to, you know, buy for more women.

Like this is, these are the articles I'm gonna read, whatever. I'm gonna follow like a hundred women so that my feed has more women in it from now on, on social, whatever it is. Like, I think that that would be great. Can we have like reminder moments? You know, but then let's make sure we're carrying it on through the year.

So, you know, I do think that as, as advocates, we are opting in in some ways and just like I am saying, Hey, I'm here to talk about women. So I realize that during women's history month I'm gonna get a little bit busier. That's, that's okay with me, that's part of my job. Um, but I wanna make sure that we're really thinking this through and it's not just.

You know, I don't wanna say performative. I feel like that word is actually overused sometimes now, but like, not performative in the sense of not just being like, let's check the box of do the women's thing and move on. Let's use this as a minute to all check in and say, what are we actually doing all year long for women?

So that March is our reflection time, but the, the whole year is the time that we're implementing and executing. As always, I am grateful for Beth's leadership. And Friendship Beyond celebrating her one year anniversary of Wonder Woman. I'd love to take a few minutes to acknowledge what some of the other women in the soul of Travel community have been up to recently. Now I want to share a bit about what will be happening here on the podcast in the next few months. Before I do, I'd like to mention that we are still looking for supporters of the show. This could be advertising on the podcast. Creating a special series to promote your industry event. You can look at my collaboration with women in travel, CIC for I-W-T-T-F for inspiration.

You can email me directly at Soul of Travel podcast@gmail.com.
